SPIN

Suicide Prevention Implementation Network (SPIN)

Since 2001, the Suicide Prevention Implementation Network (SPIN) has brought community members together to promote wellness, reduce the risk of suicide, and advance suicide prevention initiatives throughout the region.

Mission

To coordinate strategies that help promote life and reduce the impact of suicide for the residents of Brandon and surrounding area.

Goals

To build a network of community people interested in developing and implementing a suicide prevention action plan. The SPIN suicide prevention strategy will align with the Framework for Suicide Prevention Planning in Manitoba.

Objectives

  • Working to limit access to methods while identifying and addressing “hot spots” in the community
  • Educational efforts developed locally and based on community context to increase help-seeking behaviours and reduce stigma
  • Engaging in activities that expand the Canadian suicide prevention evidence base
  • Activities supporting specific populations or needs in prevention, intervention and postvention.
  • Training and learning opportunities for gatekeepers and leaders in the community.

SPIN recognizes that the impact of suicide is widespread, affecting families, friends and communities. It is a complex issue with complex contributing factors and, therefore, needs a multifaceted approach with broad community supports to build a Suicide-Safer Community.
